ANOTHER FRONT ROW FOR ALCOBA, FOURTH PLACE FOR RODRIGO
#SpanishGP qualifying. It takes very little to go from being a pure ‘race animal’ to become a qualifying master: Jeremy Alcoba has secured today his third front-row qualifying performance in a row – but also a top-four qualifier in all of the GPs undertaken so far in 2021. This is a massive step forward or the rider #52, who will try to clinch what would be his first podium of the season tomorrow from the middle of row number one.
This was all but an easy achievement for the young Spaniard, who had a difficult time in making his way through Q1 – he was third quickest – but he then did an excellent job in making the most of his only quick-lap attempt in Q2.
Team Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3 can also be very happy with Gabriel Rodrigo’s performance, as the Argentine rider finished qualifying in fourth place after a brilliant last-second effort with no slipstream to help. The #2, who has been among the key protagonists so far this weekend, will do his utmost to capitalise on an excellent qualifying tomorrow in the fourth race of the season (scheduled at 11:00 local time GMT +2).
2nd – JEREMY ALCOBA (1’45.932)
“We struggled to get up to speed so far this weekend so I’m quite surprised with the result. I was expecting a much faster qualifying session, but the grip was much lower than before, and I barely managed to make it in Q2 – and then I only did one quick lap. Honestly I need to thank the rider who was in front of me as he gave me a really good slipstream. To be starting on the front row here at Jerez is a massive advantage, as the track is really narrow.”
4º – GABRIEL RODRIGO (1’46.048)
“This morning we focused on our race pace and we found some interesting settings for tomorrow. I had a little bit of a chattering issue in the first qualifying outing, but we did well in our last lap – when it mattered the most. It’s a pity that there was no one ahead of me on the track, especially with such strong headwind, but fourth is surely an excellent result.”
